Ruedi Risler received a diploma in experimental physics from ETH (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich) in 1970 and his doctorate degree in experimental nuclear physics from the ETH Nuclear Physics Laboratory in 1975.

After postdoctoral work at the Nuclear Physics Laboratory of the University of Washington and for Lockheed Research Laboratory, Palo Alto at Siple Station, Antarctica he became the head of the Clinical Cyclotron support group at the University of Washington Medical Center in 1981.

The cyclotron support group is responsible for the operation, maintenance, repair and upgrading of the clinical cyclotron facility which is used to produce the fast neutrons for the Clinical Neutron Therapy System, CNTS, for the production of PET radionuclides and for other medically oriented research.

Ruedi Risler is presently involved in the following development projects:

- Upgrade of the control system for the cyclotron and the neutron therapy equipment.

- Extension of the therapeutic window of the fast neutron beam by boron neutron capture enhancement. See D.W.Nigg et al. Modification of the University of Washington Neutron Radiotherapy Facility for optimization of neutron capture enhanced fast-neutron therapy, Med.Phys. 27 (2), Feb 2000, p359-367

- Modification of the cyclotron to produce an alpha beam of sufficient intensity to produce clinically useful quantities of 211-Astatine, an alpha emitting radionuclide with promising features for cancer therapy applications.
